Holiday Benefit Dinner in August

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

Hello, Loves.

First and foremost: there is no dance in Sausalito tomorrow due to the Sausalito Art Festival.

Secondly: Jennifer Burner is hosting a dance on Labor Day (9-2-19) from 10-noon at the Fairfax Community Church.

Thirdly, I want to share with you a wonderful Open Floor experience that happened off the dance floor recently. Last Saturday night I had the extreme pleasure (and good luck) to be included in the Open Floor Benefit Dinner. This dinner was one of the prizes available for bidding during the holiday party last December. After a very heated bidding war, our beloved John Fraine claimed victory. The prize was dinner for six prepared by the incredibly talented Catherine McConkie with assists from Leah Brooks and Lori Saltzman with Kathy Altman taking front-of-house duties. Please see attached photos and know that I cannot recommend this benefit prize more glowingly. We decided to have some fun and dress up a bit. John couldn’t quite figure out how to tie his bowtie, but he looked ever so dashing sporting the “Sinatra” look. 😊 So here’s the thing: the whole Open Floor crew is wildly inspiring, incredibly devoted, and possessing a tremendous generosity of soul. There were six of us total, John’s guests, and we were each blown away by the thoughtfulness, the care and consideration that went into the extravaganza; from the menu (fashioned in the Open Floor Movement Cycle format and printed on linen paper), to the exquisite food (OMG on the appetizers: pancetta wrapped asparagus with chevre and the kale and green olive gazpacho shooters and of course the entrée was beyond scrumptious), the magnificent setting (gratitude to Kit & Jeff for hosting in their beautiful waterside home), and the sense of care and thoughtfulness that imbued the entire evening. With a deep bow of gratitude to Lori, Kathy, Leah, and Catherine for making the evening happen, to Kit & Jeff for hosting, and to John for including me & Roy. I thank you! And to everyone, I encourage you to consider bidding on this at the next holiday benefit party! Truly a magical evening.

Enjoy the poem . . . .. . (seemed appropriate for Labor Day and for acknowledging all the work that went into the amazing dinner last weekend).

To be of use

The people I love the best jump into work head first without dallying in the shallows and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight. They seem to become natives of that element, the black sleek heads of seals bouncing like half submerged balls.

I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart, who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience, who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward, who do what has to be done, again and again.

I want to be with people who submerge in the task, who go into the fields to harvest and work in a row and pass the bags along, who stand in the line and haul in their places, who are not parlor generals and field deserters but move in a common rhythm when the food must come in or the fire be put out.

The work of the world is common as mud. Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust. But the thing worth doing well done has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident. Greek amphoras for wine or oil, Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums but you know they were made to be used. The pitcher cries for water to carry and a person for work that is real.

~ Marge Piercy ~

May we all find work that is real. . . .and nourishes the soul.

Love you so,

KB
